PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
DAVID SHAW AND THE BEAT
FILM
Please Please Please stages desire as a ritual of fascination, obsession and submission.
A woman dances alone inside her own world — sensual, animal and ceremonial, somewhere between pagan figure, extraterrestrial goddess and dark pin-up. Around her, David Shaw remains trapped in darkness. He sees her, follows her and circles her, while she never acknowledges his presence.
Their two worlds coexist without ever truly meeting.
As the song intensifies, seduction becomes trance. The woman gradually transforms into a dominant, almost mythological figure, while David’s fascination turns into a form of voluntary surrender. The final ritual reverses the mechanics of desire entirely: the observed body takes control, and the goddess becomes executioner.
PROCESS
the film was built around a circular camera system designed to remain in near-constant motion around the performers.
Using a camera mounted on circular tracks, we repeatedly orbited the woman, David, or both bodies together. This continuous rotation creates a feeling of trance and visual obsession, reproducing David’s inability to escape the figure at the centre of his desire.
Strobes, dense smoke, deep blacks and extreme backlighting were used to constantly conceal and reveal the performers. David exists mainly inside the shadows — his face, eyes and body appearing only in brief fragments — while the female figure progressively occupies the light.
The image moves between disappearance and apparition, transforming the act of looking into something unstable, voyeuristic and almost hallucinatory.
