NOSTALGIA
MAITREPIERRE AW23
FILM
Created for Maitrepierre’s Autumn/Winter 2023 collection, Nostalgia unfolds like a visual haiku inside an artificial paradise where the virtual and the real continuously merge.
Starring Miss Fame, alongside Maeva Marshall, Marie Beltrami and Yuki Yamada, the film follows four figures wandering through a poetic and venomous world: a red forest, a blood-like lake, giant porcelain dogs and floating fish suspended above them like fragments of a dream. The space feels both protective and uncanny, like a sealed imaginary habitat built for escape.
As the film progresses, this dreamlike refuge reveals itself as a kind of enclosure. In the final moment, one of the characters approaches the edge of this world and strikes its invisible boundary, as if suddenly becoming aware of the artifice surrounding her. Nostalgia becomes an allegory of longing — the desire to flee into fantasy, and the uneasy realization that fantasy itself can become a prison.
PROCESS
Produced with Acid, the film was shot against a green screen using tracking markers and real-time camera tracking, allowing the movements of both the performers and the camera to be precisely recorded and later integrated into a fully constructed digital environment.
Around this live-action footage, the post-production team rebuilt an entire world in 3D — from the landscape and lake to the oversized animals, floating creatures and atmospheric details. Through CGI environment design, matchmoving and compositing, the performers were placed inside a complete synthetic ecosystem imagined in post-production.
Rather than using 3D as pure spectacle, Nostalgia uses digital world-building as a narrative space. The technology makes it possible to create a poetic enclosure — part terrarium, part dream, part simulation — where beauty, artifice and distance coexist, and where the final gesture of breaking the illusion becomes part of the film itself.
