Hors de moi is a documentary film exploring the construction of gender identity through the intimate testimonies of a group of young people navigating masculinity, androgyny and gender transformation.

Gender-fluid, transgender, cross-dressing or simply refusing to conform to conventional representations of masculinity, the protagonists share deeply personal stories of growing up in bodies, families and social environments that did not always allow them to exist as themselves.

Through a series of intersecting interviews, the film traces different journeys of transformation: the pressure to perform masculinity, the violence of social and familial expectations, the discovery of sexuality, experimentation with clothes and appearance, transition, drag, nightlife and the encounter with queer communities.

The title Hors de moi draws from the Latin roots of the word existence — ex-sistere: to step outside oneself, to emerge, to exist.

The film approaches identity not as something fixed, but as a continuous process of displacement and reinvention. Each protagonist must, in their own way, move beyond the identity initially assigned to them in order to make another self visible.

Shot as an intimate documentary built from real testimonies, Hors de moi became the original research and emotional foundation for Alexandre Carril's later fiction project of the same name. The interviews, encounters and personal histories collected during the documentary gradually gave rise to fictional characters and intertwined narratives, transforming lived experiences into the basis of a larger coming-of-age story about queer adolescence, chosen families and the struggle to exist outside imposed norms.
