Oyster Mushroom Orchestra is a 3D art film created for Unseen Amsterdam Photography Fair in collaboration with Hangar Brussels and the collective De Anima.

Conceived as a sensory journey through a magical fungal landscape, the film immerses the viewer inside a world of oyster mushrooms rendered at a monumental scale. Through a slow, floating forward movement, the camera travels as if in macro vision through a dense forest of giant forms, revealing folds, textures and hidden architectures usually invisible to the human eye.

Halfway between scientific observation and dreamlike fiction, the film transforms the mushroom into a living landscape, a choreography of organic bodies in perpetual metamorphosis. As the journey unfolds, the fungal forms appear to breathe, expand and communicate, until the film culminates in a final dance of spores released into the air — a suspended, almost orchestral eruption of life.

The work offers a poetic interpretation of fungal intelligence, inviting the viewer to enter a hidden world where the infinitely small becomes immersive, monumental and strangely sublime.

INSTALLATION / PROCESS

The film was presented as part of an immersive installation developed by De Anima for the Unbound section of Unseen Amsterdam. Projected onto large translucent organza sails, the moving images surrounded the audience in a layered, floating environment, extending the sensation of moving through a living mycelial world.

At the center of the installation, blocks and vessels of living mycelium were connected to electrodes. These bioelectrical impulses were captured, analyzed and translated into sound through a custom-built mycelium-based speaker / gramophone object. The soundtrack of the piece was therefore not simply composed for the film: it was generated live from the electrical activity of the mycelium itself.

This created an evolving dialogue between image, sound and living matter. The installation turned the invisible exchanges of the fungal network into a visual and sonic experience, making perceptible the silent language of mushrooms — their rhythms, pulses and electrochemical signals.

Blending 3D animation, microscopy-inspired observation, sculptural installation and living biofeedback, Oyster Mushroom Orchestra explores the possibility of a new relationship between humans and the vegetal world: one based not on domination, but on attention, listening and wonder.
